Political lines to be announced Feb. 21

They're just lines drawn on a map but the political boundaries that are scheduled to be announced Feb 21 by a Minnesota judicial panel will have a big impact on politics in 2012.
Most candidates can't wait for final lines to be drawn to begin their campaigns so they've been on the campaign trail hoping their homes will wind up in their preferred district.
Central Lakes College instructor Steve Wenzel, who served 29 years in the Legislature and later worked in President George W. Bush's Agriculture Department, knows the importance of redistricting decisions.

Clifford the Big Red Dog is coming to Brainerd!

Brainerd
Lakeland Public Television is proud to present Lakeland Kids Appreciation Day on Saturday, March 3rd.

The event will be held in the Westgate Mall in Brainerd. Beginning at 10:00 a.m. families will have a chance to meet Clifford the Big Red Dog, a popular Lakeland Kids character. Parents should bring their own cameras for photo opportunities with Clifford.

In an effort to encourage reading amongst families, Brainerd Public Library staff will be providing several story time breaks throughout the morning. There will also be prize drawings.

Girl Scout cookies tossing a wrench in weight loss plans everywhere.

Oh, February. A month that brings so many things; Valentine's Day, Punxsutawney Phil (and the hope of a shortened winter) and the influx of uniformed girl's at every office, grocery store and family gathering with brightly colored boxes of sweets. Yes, February also brings the dreaded and delightful Girl Scout cookie time.

With a little help from my friends

Many times, I am asked how I find the photos that appear in the Brainerd Dispatch? My response is always, "80 percent of the images are a direct result of my editors and friends." Throughout the years in central Minnesota, residents have been very kind and considerate and passed along photo tips to me as a friend. This degree of trust has been built one person at a time. I learned from my first editor Les Sellnow that a person's request is the most important idea or thought the resident has that day. So always be respectful no matter what it is.

The police escort that got away

Newsroom staffers serve two masters these days — readers of the news printed on the big, noisy press in the back room and readers who fire up their computer each morning to see what’s going on. That dictates how reporters and editors spend their time. What was not so important 30 years ago can be vitally important today.
A case in point is video footage. In an effort to serve our website viewers we often carry video cameras with us while on assignment in addition to the still cameras, pens and notebooks,

Coming attractions

Lakes area moviegoers are getting an early look at preliminary plans for a renovated Movies 10 in Baxter, complete with new name — Lakeland Theatre.
The plans for the 12-screen movie complex with stadium seating and two additional auditoriums added to the existing Movies 10 theater were recently presented to the Baxter Planning and Zoning Commission and will move on for review by the city council. Check out Biz Buzz for more details on the theater renovations.

There's a minnow in my soup!

My folks are great and they’ve reached that charming age when pretty much everything they say is funny - and they don’t even realize it.

Recently my daughter got married. It was a quiet affair with only close family members in attendance. They picked a Japanese steakhouse where we would go to for small celebratory dinner. And that is when the fun began.

DFL 8th District candidate Clark cites irregularities

Judging from her comments, Tarryl Clark, former state senator and DFL 8th District candidate for Congress, is not buying in to the results of Tuesday’s non-binding congressional preference vote at Tuesday’s caucuses.
With all but a few precincts counted Wednesday, former U.S. Rep. Rick Nolan scored a convincing win. The totals available Wednesday were: Nolan, 1,513; Duluth City Council member Jeff Anderson, 977; Clark, 398; undecided, 258.
Here’s a statement she released Wednesday after a deadline had passed on a story looking at the poll win by Nolan.

Not your grandfather's GOP

Minnesota Republicans on Tuesday showed they weren’t ready to hand the nomination over to the former Massachusetts governor.
As of the morning of Feb. 8, we’re still awaiting Crow Wing County’s vote totals, but it would be surprising if the county didn’t strongly support Rick Santorum.
Sitting in with the Crow Wing Township precinct Tuesday night, the tally there (reported in the Feb. 8, paper and website) was:
Rick Santorum-12.
Mitt Romney-4.
Ron Paul-3.
Newt Gingrich-2.
Statwide results showed that the Crow Wing Republicans weren’t the only ones who liked Santorum.

Make your own snow globe and let it snow!

We don't have much snow outside so it's time to make our own. Come to story time at the Brainerd Public library on Monday Feb 13th at 6:30 pm to make your own snow globe. Come hear some fun snow stories first and then make your own snow globe. All ages are welcome. Let it snow!
