"Cyclone--11" Appeared in 1911 Here

In the year when Bye & Peterson advertised suits for "college and high school chaps" at $15 and $25 . . . when D. M. Clark & Co. dealt in furniture, hardware, plumbing and heating and also directed funerals when Johnson's Pharmacy was already the Rexall store when Skauge Drug Co. sold "Skauge's Never-Cough" when the George F. Murphy Co. was a ready-to-wear shop. . .when Marie Canan Studio and Opsahl's Photographs were taking the graduates' pictures. . .and when H. W. Linnemann had a men's clothing store at 612 Front Street.

This was the year the Senior Class of 1911 at the Brainerd High school published an annual called, "The Cyclone--11."

The annual staff members included: Richard Ilse, editor-in- chief; E. 0. Swanson, associate editor; Mabel Smythe, literary editor; Kenneth Ribbel, business manager: Burton Ford, assistant business manager and athletics; Stewart Mills, circulation manager.

W. C. Cobb was superintendent of schools at that time. L. C. McCarty was High school principal and the teaching staff consisted of the following: Miss Millicent Mahlum, Latin; Miss Susan McCoy, English; Miss Josephine Nichol, history; Miss Frances Long, science; L. M. Carter, commercial; Miss Ethel Elliott, mathematics; Miss Maude Hooper, music; Miss Caroline Mower, art.

Class members of 1911 (in addition to those listed on the annual staff above) included: Grace L. Carlson, Effie Drexler, Olive L. Johnson, Martha Keough, Ottilla Keough, Nana Noren, Margaret O'Connor, Ida M. Peterson, Ruth Simons, Mabel I. Smith, Mae Staples and Lulu Trent.

A number of musical groups functioned along w it h athletics. (It was noted a football game with Wadena was forfeited by Brainerd in the second quarter because their opponents refused to play a clean game.)
