Scandinavians Not In Majority at First


Scandinavian countries didn't take the lead among the Brainerd immigrants until the census of 1900.

Early foreign born residents came chiefly from Canada with Ireland, England, Scotland, Prussia, Austria and Denmark contributing large numbers along with Sweden and Norway.

By 1900, however, Sweden had taken the lead. The census of that year gave the following origins for foreign born residents: Sweden 945, Canada 723, Germany 610, Norway 602, Finland 239.

In 1910 the census showed: Sweden 1,183; Norway 721; Germany 549.
