South East Club Began In 1911

Twenty-six teenagers met in a shack in the Falconer back yard 60 years ago and organized the South East Brainerd club. The date was Oct. 5, 1911. Later, the headquarters was moved to 1812 Oak Street.

First officers were; Oscar F. Erickson, president; Frank Alexander, vice president; George (Swede) Erickson, secretary; and Anton (Tony) Anderson, treasurer.

Among aims adopted by the club were "to promote good fellowship, ice skating, hockey, sleigh rides and baseball." in The South East Brainerd club, cooperation with the Booster Band, was the first organization to sponsor a July 4 celebration in the then new Lum Park.

Printed rules posted at the club included the following: "Do not spit tobacco or snuff on floor; do not sing, whistle or hallo.loud when coming or leaving clubroom; no member is allowed to speak or leave clubroom during meeting with out permission; do not bring liquor into clubroom; do not fight or quarrel or throw at one another."

A 50-year reunion of club members was held in 1961 with 18 members gathering from throughout the area.
