Lions Club Is Marking 50th Year
The Brainerd Lions club received its charter in November of 1921. The International Association of Lions clubs had been formed at Dallas, Tex., in 1917, with 25 clubs belonging.
A past International president. E. W. Cameron of Minneapolis. presented the charter to the local Lions club with 25 men named charter members. James Alderman and Judge D. H. Fullerton were elected first president and secretary, respectively.
Charter club members included: B. C. McNamara, Clyde L. Burnett, Fritz Hagberg, Milton Mahlum. B. S. Armstrong, R. J. Tinkelpatigh, 0. J. Bouma, T. Walter Cleary, Alderman, Richard M. Johnson, Asher Taylor, A. C. Mraz, A. W. Force, H. H. Hafstrom, R. H. Schaefer, Harry E. Butler, Dr. G. I. Badeaux, I, C. Strout, Richard S. Wilcox, Fullerton, Benson N. Dunham, Dr. William A. Erickson, R. D. Stitzel, Harry N. Smith and Clyde H. Ellis.
From its inauguration. the Lions club has been active in civic, social and athletic functions. The Lions were in the forefront on everything from initiating the growing of alfalfa in Crow Wing county and encouraging the raising of livestock to setting up tourist centers and sponsoring Boy Scout troops.
The Lions enter into a wide variety of programs such as Christmas parties for needy youngsters, backing of youth organizations in the community, sponsorship of musical presentations and activity in a great number of athletic events.
The local club has been responsible for formation of a number of other area Lion clubs, and several of its members have gone on to hold district and international posts. Dr. Rodney Meyer is president of the Lions club.
