The Exchange Club Has 23-Year History
The Exchange Club of Brainerd was organized Aug. 31, 1948, and has been a very active civic organization ever since. Dr. A. M. Mulligan was the first club president with S. G. Fitzpatrick, vice president; Eino Freeman, secretary; and the late Robert E. Olson, treasurer. The Charter Dinner was held at Club LaGuyal chartering approximately 90 members. In January, 1949, the first bulletin was published, and has continued weekly throughout the 23 years, giving the club an exceptional record of its many projects and other activities. Laurel Sandi was the first editor.
The Exchange club sponsored the first skating rinks for youngsters of Brainerd in the hollow at Norwood and 11th Streets. Attention was then turned to the French Rapids area on the Mississippi river northeast of the city. In December, 1950, a Chalet was built there. Later, ski tows and other recreational facilities have been added. Exchange has awarded their - "Golden Deed Award" to five recipients over the years. To qualify, one must be an active citizen of the area having devoted many hours and deeds for the betterment of the community. Members of the club are not eligible. These coveted awards have been presented to Miss Eula Michael, the Iate Charles Halsted, Miss Mary Tornstrom, "Pete" Humphrey and Tom O'Brien.
Established in the public Senior and Junior High schools have been Exchange's Freedom Shrine . . . replicas of the important documents of our nation throughout its history.
Present club officers are: Peter Johnson, president; Arthur Rinke, vice president; Chester Dols, secretary; and Gust "Bob" Johnson, treasurer.
