THIS VIEW of the Brainerd Public Library dates from about 1913. The Library was constructed in 1903-1905 with funds provided by Andrew Carnegie with the City of Brainerd responsible for site, equipment and maintenance. The library since its origin in 1882, had been in the depot (old water tower site). Miss Zella Burgoyne was the first librarian. A Literary society, forerunner of a library, was organized here as early as 1873. Miss Helen Runberg is present librarian and the library is part of the Kitchigami Regional Library System.

Jaycees Founded In 1936

A chapter of a state, national and international organization the Junior Chamber of Commerce (Jaycees) was established in Brainerd in 1936. Les Hage served as president from its founding through 1938.

The Jaycees are young men between 21 and 35 years of age. Purpose of their organization is twofold: improving and developing the community in which they live and improving and developing their members for business advancement and civic leadership.

Locally, the Jaycees are involved in major civic projects, including the hospital fund drive and industrial park program recently. Their activities range from the Miss Brainerd contest to mental health campaign; from Peewee hockey to Junior tennis, along with snowmobile derbies, ice races, Scouting ventures.
