THIS BUILDING, which stood at Sixth and Maple Streets, housed the Brainerd post office for 50 years, beginning in 1910. In September of 1960, postal facilities were moved to the Federal building on Fifth and Laurel Streets, and from here, the present post office serves as central distribution area for a region of some 50 communities. First post office in Brainerd operated from Sherwood Drug store on Front Street beginning Dec. 27, 1870. Locales moved through the years with the first free mail delivery instituted in 1901. Fourteen postmasters have served from Samuel Thayer in 1870 to Eugene Swanson, present postmaster.
