♦ The year was 1890. A fisherman had just dropped anchor near an island nestled in the wilderness of Bay Lake. From the island, he heard the lyrics of an old German love song beautifully chorded on a piano.

Trains Brought Visitors To Resorts in Early Days
♦ Nature provided the basic necessities, pristine lakes, towering forests and fine fishing and hunting. Railroads and early farmers and homesteaders provided the basic foundation for the Brainerd lake country resort industry.

♦ Stewart Mills, 77, president of the Fleet Farm Supply Co., 512 Laurel, Brainerd, got his start in business on an early pleasure boat.

Camp Lincoln Dates to 1908
♦ Camp Lincoln for Boys, a private camp on Lake Hubert, was founded in 1908 by William M. Blake, founder of the Blake Country Day School in Minneapolis.

♦ Erv Anderson was a visionary whose dream was to build a large night club.

♦ Walleyes were plentiful in Bay Lake as this picture shows and there were no fishing limits.

♦ Shakespeare was responsible in a round about way, for starting Minnewawa lodge on Clark Lake.

♦ When the wind was just right, Charlie Anderson yelled "cuter loose" and a pile of lumber spread out for 1 1/2 miles into Gull Lake from its junction with Round Lake.

Whitefish Mail Carried 39 Years in Ben Knebel's Boat
♦ Ben Knehel, who carried mail by boat on the Whitefish chain of lakes for 39 years without missing a day, knows the resorts of the area as well as he knew his mail run.

Boat Livery Was Gull's 1st Vacation Enterprise
♦ Although it wasn't a resort by today's standards, Buff McNaulton's boat livery on East Gull Lake is believed to be the first money-making recreational enterprise on Gull Lake.

Pelican Resorts Active Before Fawcett Came
♦ In 1917, Velvet Beach Resort on the sandy shores on Pelican Lake was already well-established.

Maddens Bring Pine Beach to the Front
♦ T. W. Harrison had visions of an electric streetcar chugging over to Gull Lake from Lake Mule Lacs and Minneapolis bringing customers to buy parts of his approximately 50,000 feet of shoreline along Steamboat and Wilsons Bays.
