 St. Joseph's Here, 1890
♦  From accommodations for 15 patients to those for 150; from minimum facilities for care to a wide expanse of treatment-- thus is marked the progress of St. Joseph's hospital in Brainerd over an 81-year history.

 Rapid Growth at State Hospital
♦  During the earliest period of the Brainerd State School and Hospital here, June of 1958 through December of 1959, there were no more than 90 residents at any time, served by 65 employees. The number of patients has grown to over 1,521; the employees to over 800.

Camp in Area For Retarded
♦  Camp Confidence (Northern Minnesota Therapeutic Camp Inc.) is a year-around program of camping and outdoor education for the mentally retarded, serving residents of Brainerd State hospital along with day time activity centers and parents.

 Nursing Home In Brainerd Dates to 1945
♦  The Brainerd Nursing Home is a private home owned by Lester Damrow and Kenneth. Herd, who is also the administrator.

Dr. Thayer Was First Physician
♦  Dr. Samuel W. Thayer apparently was Brainerd's first physician. He arrived here in 1870 with his brother, Charles P. Thayer, from Vermont.
