■ Garrett Haglin

Grade: Senior.

Age: 17.

Art focus: Brainerd High School (BHS) Wind Symphony.

Adviser nomination: “Garrett is the principle trumpet in the BHS Wind Symphony and the lead trumpet in BHS Jazz Ensemble I. He is an accomplished trumpeter and a positive leader in the BHS band program.”

Other music activities: BHS Brass Quintet, pep band and an instrumentalist at church.

Artist most admired: Louis Armstrong.

Memorable fine arts achievement: Being named Central Lakes Conference Honors’ jazz lead trumpet player in the 2012-13 school year.

Why the trumpet: “I have always loved the sound of the trumpet. Back in the sixth grade, I gave all the instruments a chance and I could get sounds out of most of them. I love the sound and the looks of the trumpet and it offers many different opportunities that other instruments don’t.”

Recent solo: “I performed ‘Aria con Variazioni’ last year for the solo and ensemble contest. I practiced it for a month, every day for an hour.”

After BHS, do you plan to play trumpet: “I plan to major in business management and minor in music performance. I am not sure what college I will attend, but whereever I go I plan to play the trumpet.”

Talk about your leadership: “I’m one of the band officers and I give pep talks to the trumpet players and also to the group as a whole. I like to get everyone pepped up. I also answer any questions the students may have.”

Favorite movie: “The Longest Yard.”

Favorite TV show: “River Monsters.”

Favorite athlete: “Adrian Peterson. I remember shaking his hand when he came to Forestview (Middle School).”

Favorite restaurant: Buffalo Wild Wings.

Other activities/clubs: Soccer and youth group leader.

Hobbies: Snowmobiling, jet skiing, all-terrain riding, fishing, wake boarding and hunting.

Memorable snowmobile trip: “When I was gone all day without stopping. I’ve done multiple trips like that. I say, ‘Go hard or not at all.’”

Parents: Tom and Ellen Haglin of Nisswa.

Honorable mentions: Miriam Pritschet, junior, mock trial: “Miriam is new to Mock Trial this year. She is playing a witness part. At our scrimmage, Miriam took the stand for the first time in competition and one of the judges gave her a perfect score on her performance. I have never seen that happen before. She gave an extraordinary performance.”

Cassidy Trott, senior, art: “Cassidy has come into her own as an artist; as she has taken every visual art class BHS has to offer. She has a way of making extraordinary sculpture out of ordinary stuff. She has become a scavenger to create innovated sculptural surprises! As a painter, Cassidy’s hard work of technique, color theory and sheer determination has produced wonderful works of art.”
