Lydia Hollen

Grade: Junior

Age: 16

Art focus: Brainonian

Adviser nomination: “Lydia plays an important role as one of the yearbook editors. Lydia does her best to go above and beyond to produce the best book possible. I know that I can always go to her if we need help with another page whether it is writing, page design or getting photos. Lydia is someone I can always count on.”

Memorable fine arts achievement: “I took first place in the district writing contest in my freshman year. It was writings from ninth though 12th-graders, so it was my best moment. My writing was a murder mystery.”

Artist most admired: “My sister, Gemma, who’s 13. She’s really talented and I admire her. She draws in pencil and it is awesome. She also does calligraphy and I really like it.”

What does the yearbook mean to you: “You have to take two art classes and pottery didn’t sound fun to me, but putting a page together in yearbook sounded cool ... I like to write and you can do that in yearbook. And the thought that your writing will be in the yearbook forever for people to read is cool.”

What’s your favorite role on the yearbook: “Writing. You can do cool things with the text, such as using shadows or colors to give the words a creative twist. It makes the words more visual.”

Best page thus far: “A ‘Student Life’ page I did last year. The two-page layout had a calendar, writings and photo cut-outs. The photos were of different student events, such as football, dress-up days and doing homework.”

Favorite movie: “The Breakfast Club”

Favorite TV show: “Project Runway”

Favorite book: “The Hunger Games”

Favorite band: One Direction

Favorite song: “I have none, but my family’s theme song is ‘That’s Not My Name,’ by the Ting Tings. Everyone always says or spells our last name wrong and we think it’s funny.”

Favorite sports team: Twins

Clubs you’re in: Student Council, Class Cabinet and Spanish Club

Parents: Daniel and Angela Hollen of Brainerd

Honorable mention: Alex Satre, senior: “Alex is an incredible drawing student. His technical skill sets him far above the norm and his creative solutions to problems are a delight for viewers of his drawings. Alex’s demeanor is pleasant, friendly and he is a real asset in the drawing studio.”
