Brainerd Dispatch/Jennifer Stockinger Brainerd High School senior Lauren Makey played her saxophone Tuesday during Symphonic Band.

Year: Senior.

Age: 18.

Art Focus: Symphonic Band.

Other art activities: Jazz band and Chamber Orchestra, where she plays the bassoon.

Why do you play the saxophone: “I started playing the alto saxophone in sixth grade. I always had it in my mind that I was going to play the sax. I was able to get the notes. I liked the way it looked and its very versatile, where I can play jazz and classical. Now I also play the saprano sax.

Do you plan to continue to play it after high school: “I don’t plan to go into music (in college), but I want to play the saxophone in the band at a college. I won’t play the bassoon in college. I just took that up this year for fun.

Are you working on a solo: “I’m working on a concerto by Glazounov for the solo and ensemble contest in February. It’s coming along.”

Most memorable fine arts achievement: Being selected for the 2011-12 Minnesota All-State Band.

They went 4-1 and took first place in Public Forum Debate. The topic for this meet is the same that will be used at the State Public Forum Tournament scheduled Jan. 6-7.

Maren Goff, senior, mock trial: The mock trial adviser said “Most of the mock trial team is new this year. Maren, who is in her third year of mock trial, has taken a leadership role. She sees what needs to be done and puts in extra time to get it done. My favorite thing about Maren is how warm, encouraging and positive she is with the newbies.”
