The city of Baxter wants a recount. The city is appealing to the State Demographer's Office that the recent population estimate is too low. The state said 4,982 people lived in Baxter in 4/1/97. Building permits indicate a population of 5,193, and utility services indicate 6,339.

The Brainerd boys' golf team advances to the MGA Region Tournament after claiming first place at the Wadena Golf Course. Mike Owens was co-medalist with a 74. Other team members are Tony Hochmayr, Bob Birkeland and Don Koski.

Convicted yesterday of murder, Roger Caldwell was sentenced today to two consecutive life terms in prison. In shocking court news, it was revealed that one of the jurors had been removed from the original jury panel after being offered a $10,000 bribe for a guilty verdict.

The best crappie to show up at Cole's Sports Shop fish contest in years was caught by an Iowa man at Lake Edward. It weighed 2-6. What may win this year's smallmouth bass division was a 5-4 lunker caught on a nightcrawler at Big Trout Lake.

John Henry Seadlund, convicted kidnap killer of Chicago businessman Charles Ross, said he would take his coming execution "by himself." The government offered him three friends or relatives at hand, but the Ironton man said: "There's no use dragging anyone else in."

Gas runs short occasionally in Brainerd. On July 3 Louis Sherlund happened to have a big supply when everyone around Brainerd was short. He allowed everyone to buy five gallons and had a steady stream of cars all day, with never less than ten in line.
