A mental patient, who is considered potentially armed and dangerous, escaped from custody while being transported from a commitment hearing in Walker to the Brainerd State Hospital. He told the deputy he was sick and, when the vehicle pulled over, he ran.

Sheriff's officials in Cass and Crow Wing counties have issued a public alert concerning Gary McKee, 36, for making alleged terroristic threats. He has threatened to kill or kidnap county officials and their family members and to blow up public buildings.

(Photo) A lot of grunting and tugging went on at the fairgrounds yesterday as teams of men and women battled for the tug-of-war championships. This team of Aitkin heavyweights won the men's division, while a team from the Red Velvet Bar won the women's title.

Brainerd police will prefer charges against a 34-year-old Brainerd man who has admitted stealing $34 from the clothes of his father while the man slept. The man reported the theft of his father's money to police after messing up the room to make it appear a burglary had taken place.

Corporal Erik Bruhn of the U.S. Marines writes his parents from a hospital in Paris. He says he was wounded in the face during recent action on the western front but says nothing about the action there. He tells his mother not to worry and that he'll be back in the battle soon.
