Brainerd's power was back to normal after lightning strikes yesterday blew out a transformer at an MPL substation. Water and Light officials said two-thirds of Brainerd was without power for more than four hours. The hospital managed to operate with two backup generators.

Fireworks exploded as scheduled at last night's opening of the Brainerd Community College theatre production of "You Can't Take it With You." The city council had issued a permit after Fire Chief Ray Shortridge said the exploding firecrackers would be safe.

Members of the Minn. Historical Society will decide July 11 whether to exhume the grave of Hole-in-the-Day, famed Chippewa chief, when they meet at the home of Pete Humphrey, Brainerd. The society will take excavating tools when they canoe down to Old Crow Wing.

In one of the closest primary votes in recent county history, Roy Wickland ran strong in Brainerd's 4th and 5th Wards to beat out police officer Bob Titus by 150 votes to secure a spot on the sheriff's ballot in November. He will face incumbent George Ridley, who strongly led the voting.
100 years ago (1918)
Paul Humphrey, salesman for the Standard Oil Co., was nearly killed when the steering gear on his car disengaged and his roadster flipped, pinning him under the wreckage. Gasoline flowed from the car and he barely put out his cigar in time to prevent an explosion.
