Lakewood receives best-in-class
STAPLES — Lakewood Health System was recently awarded the Best-in-Class seal by HR Solutions for the second year in a row. This honor is awarded to select organizations whose employee survey scores are within the top 10 percent of employee engagement and overall job satisfaction levels.
“This last year we have gone through a lot of changes and work, implementing an electronic medical record (EMR) system. To go through all this and actually increase our engagement score to be in the top 4 percent of the country says a lot for Lakewood employees,” said Lakewood President Tim Rice in a news release.
Gadbois joins Essentia Health
BAXTER — Physician Assistant Kaley A. Gadbois joined the Urgent Care Department at Essentia Health-St. Joseph’s-Baxter Clinic.
She also works in ConvenientCare at the Baxter Cub Foods.
Gadbois earned a master’s degree in physician assistant studies from Rocky Mountain College in Billings, Mont., and a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse. She is certified as a physician assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physicians Assistants.
UrgentCare treats patients on a walk-in basis and is staffed with physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants.
Nesheim joins DeRosier
Eric Nesheim recently joined DeRosier & Associates, an investment services firm in the Northern Pacific Center in Brainerd.
Nesheim has spent the last 18 years in the insurance industry as a claims specialist, most recently with Nationwide/Allied Insurance. Since joining the firm in July he has completed his Life and Health Insurance licensing as well as Series 7 & 66 securities registrations. Nesheim’s initial work within the firm will be as a registered sales assistant, managing new business transactions within the firm as well as customer service requests.
Clemens joins Essentia Health
HACKENSACK — Barbara Clemens, an experienced family nurse practitioner, will join the Essentia Health-Hackensack Clinic, 110 Third St. S. in Hackensack, in mid-February.
She’ll see both adults and children.
Clemens began her career as a registered nurse and then became a nurse practitioner. She earned a nursing diploma from Broadlawns Polk County School of Nursing in Des Moines, Iowa, and trained as a family nurse practitioner at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine in Grand Forks, N.D.
Clemens is certified as a family nurse practitioner by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
Felton, coalition gain honor
Kelly Felton, coalition coordinator with the Working Together Coalition (WTC), was awarded a scholarship from the Anti-Drug Coalitions of America and been invited to speak at this year’s Substance and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) National Prevention Day Feb. 4, at the Gaylord National Hotel & Convention Center in National Harbor, Md.
Felton will present at two sessions, focusing on WTC activities and efforts in the Pine River-Backus, Walker-Hackensack-Akeley and Northland communities during last year’s first annual national prevention week. She will highlight the planning process, positive outcomes, increased community awareness of behavioral health issues and new partnerships formed during that week that have yielded additional collaboration.
This one-day event provides a forum for prevention practitioners, community leaders, researchers, scientists, consumers and advocates in the behavioral health field to learn about effective programs and the latest developments in the areas of substance abuse prevention, substance abuse treatment and mental health. Participants are able to network with other SAMHSA grantees and partners and will have the opportunity to take part in workshops to enhance their strategic organizational skills and to share experiences and information.
The ninth annual Prevention Day is in conjunction with CADCA’s National Leadership Forum. CADCA’s Forum is the nation’s largest meeting for community prevention leaders, treatment professionals and researchers. The theme this year is “Coalitions: Science, Strategies, and Solutions” which emphasizes the importance of developing broad-based strategic alliances, implementing proven and promising strategies, and achieving population-level change.
Lakewood receives UCare
Quality of Care Award
STAPLES — Lakewood Health System was honored by UCare Minnesota at its fourth-annual Salute to Excellence event on Nov. 27, 2012, in Minneapolis.
The event recognizes outstanding performances by Minnesota clinics and care systems that participated in UCare’s 2011 Pay for Performance Program (P4P).
The Pay for Performance Program results from 2011 were analyzed in 2012, and payments were made in November 2012. These payments recognized and rewarded providers for superior or improved performance in measurable key areas of preventative care. Lakewood Health System was given this award in recognition of its quality of senior care, including Medicare-reimbursed care.
Care Coordinators Nicole Worden and Melissa Pape, along with Dr. John Halfen, medical director at Lakewood, accepted the award.
“It must be emphasized that this award is for all the work being done at Lakewood that contributes to our success, not only the Medical Home program,” Halfen said in a news release.
UCare is an independent, nonprofit health plan providing health care and administrative services to more than 300,000 members.
Deadline nears on loan payments
The deadline period to request loans and loan deficiency payments (LDPs) on 2012 crop year wool and unshorn pelts is Jan. 31.
The LDPs are payments made to producers who, although eligible to obtain a loan, agree to forgo the loan in return for a payment on the eligible wool or unshorn pelt. For the 2012 crop year, the national LDP rate for ungraded wool was $0.00, so although a producer may request an LDP for wool, a zero payment would be approved. For loans, the loan rate for 2012 ungraded wool is $.40, and beneficial interest in the wool must be retained through the life of the loan.
Wool producers are now authorized to apply for Loans or Loan Deficiency Payments (LDPs) for the upcoming 2013 crop year. Producers must complete page one of the CCC-633EZ form for the 2013 crop year and return it to the local office prior to shearing or selling.
The effective LDP rate for wool is currently $0.00, but the rate changes weekly so contact the office to inquire about the rates when you lose beneficial interest in your wool. Producers must request benefits by Jan. 31, 2014. Applications must be faxed or mailed by this date.

CLL presents ‘taxes and spending’ Jan. 29
The Center for Lifelong Learning (CLL) at Central Lakes College, Brainerd will present Louis Johnston with “Taxes and Spending: What’s Ahead for the U.S. and Minnesota?” from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Jan. 29 in the Business and Industry Center.
Taxes, spending and the size of government are important issues at all levels of government. In this talk, Johnston will address three questions:
• What are the current and future challenges faced by the state and federal governments?
• What are the differences between the political challenges and the economic challenges (they are not the same)?
• How can individual citizens make sense of these issues and get involved in their solution?
CLC offers QuickBooks
Pro accounting class
Central Lakes College has scheduled a two-night, computerized QuickBooks Pro Accounting Advanced course of the Brainerd campus.
The advanced class is 6 to 9 p.m. Feb. 5 and Feb. 12 in C221. The fee is $99.
This class will provide the advanced skills necessary to get more detail from the software package. The student will learn software features including, set up overview, preferences, customization, item detailing for inventory control, sales and purchase orders, bank reconciliation, and monthly reporting. This is a two-week course, one night per week. Classroom size is limited.
The instructor will be Jay Bock.

OSHA general industry safety
Feb. 6 and 7 at CLC
Central Lakes College will host a 10-hour general industry Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) workshop from 8 a.m. to noon on Feb. 6 and Feb. 7 at the Business and Industry Center in Brainerd.
This class requires an OSHA-Authorized Trainer and is taught in a pre-set format throughout the country. Participants receive a completion card from the OSHA Training Institute. Some companies require all contractors on their premise to have this card.

Mid-Minnesota Builders Association and Central Lakes College will provide continuing education credits for MMBA members and non-members 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Feb. 2.
Participants may earn seven credits of continuing education for the residential (building, remodeling or roofing) industry.
Cost is $25 for MMBA members and $100 for non-members.

B & I Center to host ‘Going
into Business for Yourself’
To help entrepreneurs to succeed in business, Jay Bock will teach “Going into Business for Yourself” at the Business and Industry Center of Central Lakes College in Brainerd from 6 to 9 p.m. Feb. 7.
This session covers all areas of business start-up, helpful advice on how to get your dream off the ground and stay profitable, including financing a new venture and necessary filings with the State of Minnesota.
Follow-up counseling is available to qualified individuals from the Small Business Development Center’s team of consultants at no charge to the individual.
Tuition is $49 per person plus $29 for each additional business partner. Deadline to register is Jan. 31.
SBDC offers ‘Forms of
Business Structure’ in series
“Forms of Business Structure” is the second in the spring Advantage Series presented by the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) in the Business and Industry Center at Central Lakes College (CLC) in Brainerd from 6 to 7:30 p.m., Feb. 5, in Room E151 at CLC.
Jay Bock will explain what form of business entity to establish. The most common forms of business are sole proprietorship, partnership, corporation, S corporation or a Limited Liability Company (LLC). Each form has advantages and disadvantages in complexity and taxation.
Choosing the right business form requires a delicate balancing of competing considerations. Learn how to select, plan, and organize the business form that is a perfect fit for you. If you are thinking of starting or purchasing a business, this session is for you. This series will include four 1.5-hour sessions that will help you be better prepared if you are looking to start a business. Some of these sessions will also be helpful if you’re in business already.

Business future depends on succession planning
“Succession planning is so important that in a recent study, 80 percent of companies in the U.S. said their number one concern was keeping up with the demand for leadership,” said Sally Klauss, who teaches supervisory leadership courses to people all over the country.
Klauss teaches her online supervisory leadership course and certification sponsored by Central Lakes College’s Customized Training.
Klauss has an extensive background in management, employee training and development, total quality management and business management. She is also a leadership coach specializing in management development. She has experience teaching this program at Riverside Community College.
The course covers areas such as communication skills, ways to attain buy-in and support, concepts around problem-solving, and decision-making. These life skills help not only supervisors and managers but also anyone wanting to improve the quality of their home and work life. Kori Busho, Central Lakes College Customized Training representative, said the course is offered four times a year. Klauss also facilitates The Management Boot Camp course, which is one month long.
