If the Olive Garden in Baxter looks a little different to you, it’s not just that it’s new to the lakes area.
The chain changed the look for its new restaurants creating a rustic stone exterior and using a farmhouse look with exposed wooden beams and character of a farmhouse in Tuscany, Italy, as a model.
“This is how they’ll all be from now on,” said Olive Garden General Manager Miranda Ahlers. “We’re one of the newer ones to have the exact layout we have.”
About 150 people were hired for the restaurant. It’s Ahlers first restaurant as general manager.
“It’s been fabulous,” she said. “Things have gone much more smoothly than I could ever imagine.”
Ahlers has been with Olive Garden for more than seven years and made the move to the Brainerd lakes area from Wisconsin.
With changes in the building design, Ahlers said the food will be the same with the traditional entrees. The Baxter restaurant, which seats 246, is a little smaller than some but pretty typical, she said.
Inside the bar area is separate from the rest of the dining. Full service dining is available at the bar. Ahlers said the restaurant can respond to any size of group. The parking lot has dedicated parking for to-go orders. The restaurant doesn’t take reservations, at least that continues to be the policy now.
Olive Garden has been involved in a year-long overhaul, which includes highlighting lower-calorie meals and those which are expected to appeal to folks on a budget.
And a new wrinkle for Olive Garden is a “Dinner Today, Dinner Tomorrow” as customers get a meal at the restaurant and take a second meal home with them with instructions on how to heat it for the next day. Guests may pick from five entrees for $12.95 for the take-home meals. The promotion across the chain started Monday. Industry watchers said Olive Garden is joining other restaurants like Applebee’s that already moved to offer economic options to appeal to customers in the new economy.
Among other seasonal food, Olive Garden has a winter soup on hand now in its chicken and potato Florentine. Ahlers said a couple is typically able to get a meal soup, salad, dinner meal with a drink for about $30 to $40.
Another change for Olive Garden comes with its signature wines, now Porta Vita created from the Cavit Winery in northern Italy exclusively for the restaurant. The wines come in a white, blush and red. Olive Garden notes it has been influenced by the popularity of moscato varieties.
The changes are all part of Olive Garden’s recent efforts to update its image, complete with new commercials and ad campaign slogan of “Go Olive Garden.” The company reported the menu changes are designed to make it easier for guests who are looking for lighter menu options less than 575 calories with entrees such as lasagna primavera with grilled chicken, seafood Brodetto, herb-grilled salmon, linguine alla marinara or Venetian apricot chicken.
Olive Garden is still looking to hire employees and is taking applications online.

Add commentOlive Garden=not very good service
We were at the Olive Garden last week. We thought going in the afternoon would be a good idea to avoid the crowds. When we walked in, there was a gal cleaning the windows, she turned and looked at us but said nothing. When we got inside someone from behind the counter asked how many, I said three, she told us there was immediate seating in the cafe or we could sit on the other side. I waited and she said nothing else, I was not sure if we were supposed to seat ourselves in the restaraunt side or not. Finally another gal asked how many and seated us in the restaraunt. The food was good, but our waitress was less than upbeat about us being there. I am not sure if we willl go there again. I ordered a cup of coffee to go with our dessert at the end of the meal, $2.60 for a cup of coffee...and not much more because it was at the end of our meal. Not impressed.

OH JG
ESPN as Ditka would say. COM'ON MAN!! You are tougher than than a full belly.
It's usually best to stay
It's usually best to stay away from a brand new restaurant for about a month so that they can work the kinks out. That's why there are bad comments and some good ones. But I tell you what Galtenstien, You haven't tried gnocchi until you've tried MY gnocchi.
will wait a month or so
If you expect perfect service don't go to a new restaurant people....and when you experienced some totally unacceptable behavior I certainely hope you bring it to the attention of a manager and just don't whin about it on public blog. Pretty sure the going rate for a cup of coffee or soda is $2-$3 at most chain restaurant or upscale dining. I am excited to go to the new Olive Garden, but I will be patient and wait a month or so, so as I'm not disappointed!!
I'm also planning to wait a
I'm also planning to wait a bit. I want the new chefs to learn the food and the waitstaff to learn what is expected. Olive Garden isn't fine dining, but it is a step up from Mom and Pop casual family restaurant type dining and the service should be friendly and efficient, but not too "familiar". It should be a little more formal than "Bar and Grill" or "Steakhouse" style dining.
Did I read the article correctly that they hired 150 people? Sounds like the obviously were planning on weeding out quite a few in the first month or so.
Olive Garden, Not Unusual
Olive Garden is owned by a company called Darden Cos., out of Florida. They also own many other restaraunt chains around the US. One of those chains familiar to our part of the country is Red Lobster. Their bottom line is $$$, and service/atmosphere/price is not on their mind. They have been known to stuff more than allowed (by local/state fire code) people, into their facilities at busy times just for that bottom line. I have had bad experiences in several of their businesses throughout the country. I hope that will change in our area because we don't need another closed business in our area. I haven't been to this new one yet and by reading the above posts, probably won't. 2 big thumbs down for Olive Garden.
Olive garden
So what I hear you saying is the opinion of others is going to effect how you eat? I have a family member that works there, I was able to eat there on a day she didn't work and the service was fine. I have many friends and family that have eaten there already and the service was terrific from what they have told me. Yes I do think that the first month or so they weed people out, but I also know they spent almost two weeks training all the people they hired, and some were trained longer. I am sure that some days may be better then others, but even we have days like that. If you don't know what it will be like just go eat there and decide for yourself if you want to wait a while.
Oh by the way the shrimp scampi is delicious
