Applicants sought for soybean ambassador program

The Minnesota Soybean Research & Promotion Council encourages young adults wishing to enhance their leadership skills and add unique experiences to their resumes to apply for the 2012 Minnesota Soybean Ambassador program.

Student’s aged 18 to 22 who are enrolled in a two-year or four-year post-secondary education program related to agriculture are eligible to apply.

“The soybean industry in Minnesota is so diverse, ranging from advanced biofuels, to green products for home and industry, to feeding livestock,” said Vernon Pooch, chair of the MSR&PC Education Committee, in a news release. “This program is a great place for young people to engage in activities that will help them become tomorrow’s leaders.”

Applicants must be 18 years of age, but not over 22 years of age, by Jan. 1 of the year they apply for the ambassador program. They must be in a two-year or four-year post-secondary ag-related education program. Applicants must have a strong interest in the future of the soybean industry and agriculture. They must be able to commit to a one-year term, beginning in June 2012. Applicants will need strong communication and leadership skills. An individual may participate in the Soybean Industry Ambassador Program twice, as long as the qualification requirements are met. Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license and be insurable under our commercial driver policy.

Minnesota Soybean Ambassadors attend the Minnesota Ag Ambassador Institute and provide assistance to Minnesota Soybean staff and farmers at a variety of events throughout the year. Required activities include Farmfest, “Soybean Day” at the State Fair and Ag Expo/ Minnesota Soybean Growers Annual Meeting. Each ambassador is awarded a $2,000 scholarship and has the chance to earn two additional stipends of $250 each.

Applications for the 2012 Minnesota Soybean Ambassador program must be postmarked by March 1, 2012 to be eligible for final consideration. Candidates will be contacted for interviews and new Ambassadors will be selected by May 1, 2012. More information and applications have been posted at www.mnsoybean.org.
