Brothers Motorsports is adding a location at the former Johnson Rental Property on Highway 371 North.

The site, on Novotny Road, is next to Lewie's RV. The business is Brothers 371 Motorsports.

Steve Vandeputte, Brothers Motorsports owner/general manager, said the plan is to be up and running next week. Brothers Motorsports has been in Brainerd since 1989 and has a second site in Crosslake.

Vandeputte describes the new Highway 371 location as a power sports convenience store, which will serve clients using the highway corridor, including weekenders and tourists.

"The idea is to catch you on your way up north and provide accessories, fast moving parts, rentals, clothing, machines," Vandeputte said.

The 371 shop will be a drop-off location for service needs, which will continue to be handled at Brothers Motorsports main location just off Highway 210 in Baxter between the Westport Mall and the Paul Bunyan Trail.

Brothers Motorsports employs about 30. And the added location is expected to mean more jobs down the, uh, trail.

"The minute I can grow this thing, I'm looking to add more employees," Vandeputte said. "I'm looking to add more employees in the near future."

This snowy December may be part of a sea change for outdoor sports with a winter focus in an area where snowmobiles once reigned supreme and brought tourist dollars into the community.

Vandeputte said ATV sales have fallen 60 percent, but snowmobiles have seen a resurgence, with a 12-percent increase in the last two years.

"Snowmobiling is definitely on the way back," Vandeputte said. "Brainerd used to be, when I was a kid in the late 60s and early 70s, was known as the snowmobile capital of the world. We're due to cycle back in the snowmobiling."

Rivers Edge Auto recently opened on Highway 371 south of Pine River. The business is owned by Dale and Judy Rieger. Their son, Corey, also assists with the business.

Dale Rieger has a 20-year history in the car business. He said the auto business that used to be at the site closed in 2007. Rieger said he previously worked with Osterloh's and Tanner Motors and was general manager at Marine Max in Walker for eight years. Rieger said he plans to put all that experience to play for his new business.

"It's more of a need-based economy," Rieger said, so his focus is on affordable vehicle. He's working with consignment, buying, selling and trades. And he's already been hunting for vehicles based on customer requests.

"I can find just about anything," Rieger said.

The most expensive vehicle on his lot is $14,900, Rieger said, adding most are below $7,000.

The Berrywood Apartments, developed by Navillus Land Co., is going up along Berrywood Drive just off College Road in Baxter.

Kuepers Inc. Architects and Builders of Baxter is the builder/designer on the project, which calls for a 29-unit apartment building.

The Internet Crime Complaint Center reports receiving complaints on several scams - such as one telling potential victims a hit was taken out on them and they need to pay $150,000 to $200,000 to call off the hit. The money not only will end the hit but the potential victim will get a tape of evidence against the person who hired the hit in the first place. Another scam preys upon people who are looking to adopt with the claim of an overseas orphaned child that needs a home. The perpetrators say they will ship the child upon receipt of money. Of course, no child was provided for adoption and the money was gone.
