I've never had a snowy Christmas.

I know for most Minnesotans that is not only shocking, but borders on horrifying. What can I say? I grew up in Northern California. My neighbors put Christmas lights in their palm trees.

I've lived in Minnesota for a grand total of 16 months and am heading into my second real winter. Ever.

Last winter I learned a few things about living in the snow, driving in the snow and walking in the snow. Some of my "lessons" were painful. Some were expensive. All remind me of my own smallness.

I feel like I might owe some people, maybe a lot of people, an apology.

I'm sorry.

I have this bad habit of ending phone calls prematurely. I don't know if it's cultural, personal or biological. But, sometimes, when I am hanging up the phone, I can still here the voice on the other line saying, "Okay then, talk to you later, bye now, okay..."

I did not hang up on you. I did not get fed up with talking to you. I do not mind using my daytime mobile minutes to share a conversation with you. I do like you. I just thought we were done talking.

UPDATE: When I started writing this blog yesterday there were just under a million views of the KONY 2012 video.

It's gone viral. More than 19 million people have watched on YouTube alone and this thing has taken over the internet. People are watching and they are moving to action.

By the way the weather looks right now, you would never know there was a spring-snowmegeddon pounding the Brainerd lakes area this morning.

It's so beautiful outside, I would totally pull my hammock out... except for the foot of fresh snow burying my hammock's grassy home in the yard.

Amidst the misnamed "winter storm" that decided to show up in spring, I learned a few things today about a good March snow storm:

1- I like March snow far less than January snow.

My name is kind of the female equivalence of "John Smith." There are A LOT of Sarah Nelsons on planet earth.

A LOT.

In fact, I know there's a least three or four in the Brainerd lakes area.

I got a phone call today, on my work line, from a stranger looking for "Sarah Nelson." She left me a message while I was out of the office and tried to get through a second time when she didn't hear back from me. On the second try, I answered.

This is kind of how it went down:

Me: "Newsroom, this is Sarah."

My passport expired yesterday.

It doesn't sound like that big of a deal, and the reality is— I should be relieved.  The little blue book that gets me in and out of the country looks more like a home-ec project than proof of my citizenship.

That dumb thing has gotten me detained in my own country, detained in other countries, denied entry visa, removed from various forms of transportation and possibly added to the FBI watch list.

I don't know for sure.

Osama bin Laden is dead.

The second those words flashed across the screen Sunday night, I knew people across the world would be reacting. Ten years of searching for this man and suddenly they had him.

It didn't feel real.

Like every other person connected to any form of social media, I immediately checked my Facebook to see what people were saying. That's the beauty of social media— it creates an immediate outlet for people to vent their feelings.

I just completed my fourth marathon. I was feeling pretty good about my accomplishment until I talked to my chiropractor. She must be doing her marathon research because she told me:

"The average person can run two marathons in their lifetime before they start to do permanent damage to their body."

Let's just hope I'm not average.

I'm not really a football fan. I watch it, but only because the men in my life love it. I usually find a book and a blanket and go to my happy place while the neanderthals smash their heads together any given Sunday.

I know, so un-American.

When I heard the news that the Vikings would be playing their final home game at TCF Bank stadium I laughed...outdoor football game in December in Minnesota!? That sounds about like the worst thing ever. Those people will freeze their faces off.

Everyone knows traveling during the holidays can be horrendous. There are three basic rules to holiday travel:

1- Leave early
2- Pack light
3- Be nice to the airline employees (and TSA agents as well)

With all of our planning and packing and leaving early, we still managed to land ourselves in the worst case scenario of holiday travel.

Merry Christmas. We missed our flight.
