"Miss Saigon" is a love story set in war torn Vietnam, mid-1970's. Two star-crossed lovers cling to each other as the world crumbles into chaos. As the lyrics explain in The Last Night of the World, "In a place that won't let us feel. In a life where nothing seems real. I found you." Chris, an American G.I, meets Kim, a young Vietnamese girl forced into prostitution. The bond they form in two short weeks gives them each the courage to battle on through the turmoil of the end of the war and its aftermath.
Like the gifted author, E.B. White, I also maintain my childlike sense of wonder, especially at the theatre. Sometimes, I get so caught up in the show, that I forget I'm there to view and review. Then, I get lost again, accepting that mesmerized moment will come back as I type my review. I don't think I'm the only adult who laughed and giggle, sighed and cried along with the children as we watched the stunning performance of "Charlotte's Web" at the Children's Theatre Company in Minneapolis. All of the actors portray their characters with much animation.
If you've ever wanted to see a production of an Anton Chekhov play, but were a little leery about connecting to a play written in the late 1800's in Russia, then The Guthrie Theater's production of "Uncle Vanya" is for you. Even if this isn't one of the events on your bucket list, I say add it, now. This is your chance to see superb actors bringing to life a classic piece that has been adapted for the stage by a living playwright, Brian Friel, who has kept the feeling of the setting, while making the play accessible to a modern audience.
Have you heard of the book, "The Artist's Way" by Julia Cameron? It is a 12-week program for people wanting to discover and heal their inner artist. She has all kinds of useful information in the chapters, and then ends each chapter with tasks to do over the course of the week. Over the years, I have read this book more times than I can remember. The last time I went through it, I gathered a couple of my friends to join me. It was a great experience to work together with others on this journey.

The Alexandria Area Arts Association is pleased to present a scrumptious musical treat for the entire family, Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka, September 20-29 at the AAAA Theatre in Downtown Alexandria. The timeless story follows the world-famous candy man and his quest to find an heir amongst the world’s children.

Friends of the Brainerd Public Library, chaired by Sheila DeChantal, put on a wonderful event on August 23, 2013 at the Arrowwood Lodge. Wine and Words included a social hour with wine donated by Cash Wise Liquor. Thanks, Mark! Many local groups and businesses contributed to the silent auction with gift baskets that ranged from chocolate to board games, and many, many books and fun items. The food was delicious, especially when shared by so many friends of the library. The house was packed.
Taking classes and connecting with other artists boosts your creativity. The Brainerd area has many offerings. On Tuesdays, during the Farmer's Market at the Franklin Arts Center, The Crossing Arts Alliance is offering classes on literary arts. From 11:00-1:00, you can enjoy your lunch, buy fresh produce, and learn about the world of literary arts. The first class was taught by Seal Dwyer from North Star Press. I taught a class on the basics of blogging, and hope that I encouraged more people to put their words and images out on the world wide web.
