I'm in the process of typing up the Brainerd Warriors wrestling team's season preview. I had a few questions rattle through my fingertips that might be fun for a little discussion among mat fans.
First: Who was the best wrestler you ever saw from the Brainerd lakes area and why?
Second: Who is the top wrestler from your high school? I have all the 100 match winners, but with more matches being wrestled now days, what gets lost are some of the older guys who didn't even wrestle 100 times in their career.
Let's hear some educated guesses as to which legendary NFL franchise wins Super Bowl XLV Feb. 6 in Arlington, Texas.
I'm not sure which direction I'm going yet. I like the Green Bay Packers' offense on the turf and Aaron Rodgers is playing the best at the quarterback position right now. But Big Ben does just enough to win and his two Super Bowl rings proves he can win in big games.
Both defenses are tremendous and similar since Dom Capers worked for both franchises.
My boys basketball season starts tonight with the Brainerd vs. Pequot Lakes game at Brainerd High School. It's an odd beginning to the season with three new coaches. It's going to be hard to get used to not seeing Lynn Peterson, Kurt Stumpf and Wade Haapajoki on their respective sidelines. I enjoyed working with all three coaches and felt the later two could have created something similar to what Peterson enjoyed for so many years in Staples.
While my work title seems simple enough, people really don't have a clue what I do. So here is a brief synopsis of a life of a Brainerd Dispatch sports writer.
First of all, I don't cover the Vikings, Timberwolves, Twins or Wild. In fact the only professional sporting event I have ever covered was the 2002 PGA Championship at Hazeltine National and the Lucas Oil Nationals at BIR.
My job revolves around the local high schools and Central Lakes College during the school year. The summer I attempt to cover the local golf scene between my vacations.
There is a reason the word fan is in fanatic. And other than Justin Bieber or Lady Gaga fans, no group of people are more fanatical than sports fans. Painted chests, rusted, 30-year old Winnebagos decked out in team colors and flags, the use of “we” when referring to the person’s favorite team are prime diagnosis for sports fanatics. More proof of the lunacy are the questions they ask themselves.
When University of Minnesota athletic director Joel Maturi announced Jerry Kill as the Gophers new head football coach, he said a key issue he was looking for was a coach who could recruit well in the upper midwest.
Don’t we want somebody who can steal kids from Florida, Texas and California?
Isn’t that where the talent is?
Looking back at the last 12 national champions, only one — Ohio State — is not from the Southeastern Conference or a place that rarely sees snow.
One good thing has already happened this new year — the Minnesota Vikings have stopped embarrassing themselves.
At least on the field.
Many things need to be fixed before the start of the next season, whenever that may be. The first thing is changing Leslie Frazier’s title from interim head coach to head coach. That happened Monday so a pat on the back to the Wilf franchise for getting one thing right so far.
The Brainerd Dispatch sports department will announce its 2011 All-Area Volleyball Team and Player of the Year awards Nov. 19.
Who absolutely needs to make the list of the area's top 12 players and why? Who would be your choice for player of the year and why?
What was your favorite moment from the 2011 volleyball season?
And a bit of trivia. Who led the Brainerd lakes area in kills this season?
Grand View Lodge’s Cru restaurant in Nisswa will be the setting tonight.
I’m heading there to experience the talents of chef Paul Fitzpatrick and enjoy the atmosphere created by manager Christine Ianelli.
