The Brainerd Dispatch for the first time ever, Friday made “Today’s Top Ten Front Pages” in Newseum.org, Washington, D.C., the most interactive museum.
What this means is that the Dispatch’s Friday front page was singled out as one of the best pages not only in newspapers in the United States, but newspapers in the entire world!

For the past 12 years, I have been invited to read to kids at Riverside Elementary School for February’s “I Love to Read Month.” The school invites “celebrity readers” in the community to spend 20-30 minutes to read to one of the classes. The object is to encourage children to read through the use of the celebrity’s role model.
I don’t see myself as a celebrity, but anything I can do to help a student get motivated to read is well worth the time to do. Reading is very important and is a skill they’ll need to live the rest of their life.

As you most likely have read in Thursday’s Brainerd Dispatch, I covered the Brainerd School District’s sixth through eighth grade spelling bee held at Forestview Middle School in Baxter. This year let’s hear it for seventh-grader Adam Kleist who won the bee. You gotta love Adam and his confidence! Adam had to spell “munchkin” and he instantly giggled at the word because he himself is short. I too had to giggle. I’m 5-foot-2-inch on a good day — OK so maybe not that tall — so I can appreciate the humor.

I don’t go out with the girls often, but when I do it is always guaranteed to be a good time.
On Friday night, I and five other girlfriends went to “Away in the Basement, A Church Basement Ladies Christmas,” at Tornstrom Auditorium in Brainerd. All of us girls know each other through our daughters’ Girl Scout Troop No. 852.

Hey, all you hunting widows in the Brainerd lakes area! The second weekend of deer hunting is approaching and if you’re like me you’ll be a widow, since my husband will be out in the woods in his bright orange, trying to shoot the “big one.”
We’re lucky here since there are several crafts and arts events going on Saturday and Sunday that only open their doors during one or both of the deer hunting weekends. So if you miss it, you’ll have to wait until next year.

My husband, Jason, and I, for the second year in a row, have taken second place in the pair category in Fitness United, the community health and wellness eight-week challenge hosted by United Way of Crow Wing and Southern Cass Counties.

A news story in the Dispatch Friday reported that a decision the Minnesota Girl Scout council made on selling some of its camps because of funding has upset one Scout to the point that she and others in her troop plan to sit out the big annual cookie sale that starts Saturday.

Brainerd lakes area residents who watch the Super Bowl on Sunday may want to pay special attention to the halftime show. A 2007 Brainerd High School graduate, Ali Clough, has a great opportunity to dance in the show with the famous band — the Black Eyed Peas.
