After years of touring the Midwest with their bluegrass band, childhood best friends Joe Mailander and Justin Lansing, originally of Denver, Colorado, decided to return to where it all began: childhood imagination. That’s when they moved to Minneapolis to start their family music band called The Okee Dokee Brothers. They will be here to delight and inspire you on Thursday, May 17th at 3:30pm at the Brainerd Public Library. And the best part is it’s all free of charge, affordable for any family.

Finnish Storyteller at the Brainerd Public Library April 11

Multi-talented Finnish storyteller and magician, Cheryl Sawyer, is coming to the Brainerd Public Library on Wednesday, April 11 at 3:30pm to share her stories and fun. She weaves in magic and balloon art making, and enthralls crowds of children of all ages with her skill at speaking Finnish. She infuses humor and creative sound effects in the story telling and draws you in to use your imagination.

Calling all time travelers! The Brainerd Public Library is proud to present Time Travel Minnesota Style. Time Travel Minnesota Style is four week after school adventure for youth ages 9 to 13 on Tuesday’s in April from 3:30 to 4:30pm.

Composer Rick Sowash will visit the Brainerd Public Library on Tuesday, April 10 at 6:30pm. Sowash was commissioned by the Heartland Symphony Orchestra to write "North Country Suite" which will be premiered in Brainerd on Sunday, April 15 at 2:00pm at the Tornstrom Auditorium. Join us at the Brainerd Public Library on Tuesday, April 10 at 6:30pm as Rick gives us insight to how “North Country Suite" depicts the landscape and the character of the people of northern Minnesota. Rick will describe the five movements in “North Country Suite”:

I. Spirit of the North
II. Northern Lights

Take a step back in time with Virginia Mae Hope, portrayed by Melissa Friedmann of the Minnesota History Players. Virginia was a pilot and was a member of the Women Airforce Service Pilots. She will be at the Brainerd Public Library on Tuesday, March 20th at 3:30pm. Her life was short but exciting. Learn what it was like growing up on a farm in Winnebago, Minnesota during the Great Depression and serving as a female pilot during World War II. There will also be information about the bombing of Pearl Harbor and its national impact, and the changing roles of women during World War II.

Suzanne Collins’s fast-paced, plot-driven novels had us all up late at night turning pages, so in this workshop, we’ll slow things down and examine why. Looking at characterization, tone, point of view, and style, we’ll analyze why these books are so absorbing and discuss how we can learn from them as writers. Limited space available.

Krueger has found his niche in writing Minnesota mysteries and his readers are always enthralled. His presentations entertain and delight his audiences. Lakeland Public Television is proud to present Lakeland Kids Appreciation Day on Saturday, March 3rd.

The event will be held in the Westgate Mall in Brainerd. Beginning at 10:00 a.m. families will have a chance to meet Clifford the Big Red Dog, a popular Lakeland Kids character. Parents should bring their own cameras for photo opportunities with Clifford.

In an effort to encourage reading amongst families, Brainerd Public Library staff will be providing several story time breaks throughout the morning. There will also be prize drawings.
