How many times have you wanted to photograph someone or something against the direct sun? My favorite is late afternoon or early morning golden sun over water or ice. Last week, I waited at the Corps of Engineers access on Gull for any angler to walk across the ice to their vehicles. In winter, the sun is low in the southern sky making it easy to photograph against the low angle of the sun.
To capture the scene as you see it, you must overexpose the image by at least two stops from what your meter shows in an auto mode. This can be done easily with the exposure compensation dial. Another way to expose properly is the Bill Marchel method. Point the camera to a portion of the sky to the right or left of the sun, capture the setting and the final exposure should be right on.
Please test your exposure before those anglers start walking back across the ice. You have one chance to get it right.
