Inexpensive burgers draw attention to Garrison's McDonald's

Garrison is notable for being the smallest city in the United States with a McDonald’s, but USA Today reported Friday that restaurant offers the least expensive hamburger in the mega-chain.

USA Today founder Al Neuharth, in his weekly column, celebrated the 56th anniversary of the opening of the first McDonald’s with a look at how hamburger prices have characterized inflation since 1955. The first McDonald’s, he wrote, charged 15 cents for a hamburger. The cheapest hamburger today is found on the shores of Mille Lacs Lake — 89 cents. The most expensive McDonald’s burgers are sold in New York City ($1.69) and Los Angeles ($1.96).

It’s no surprise if the successful newspaper executive is partial to small towns. He’s a native of Eureka, S.D., and began his newspaper career in the composing room of the weekly Alpena (S.D.) Journal.

Maybe Garrison will one day replace its iconic walleye statue on the east side of the lake with a giant hamburger.
