We believe respectful and civil conversation is essential to a community, and we need your help to improve the quality of story commenting.
Our new user point system is part of that effort. You'll be awarded points for good commenting and for helping improve the commenting (voting, flagging spam, et cetera).
If you break the rules, you may lose points. If we have to block your account, you'll lose everything.
Some of this is automated, but it will take a few days to be fully configured, so don't be surprised if your point total says at zero for awhile.
Our Internet staff also can add (or subtract) points directly.
The points for different types of posting behavior varies and will change throughout the life of the points system to try to eliminate gaming of the system.

I'm sorry I didn't make that statement more clear.
Where it says "good commenting" it should have said "good commenting behavior", meaning that comments that don't violate the Terms of Service, ie: racist, abusive, harassing, offensive.
The 'machine' doesn't interpret. Any comments marked for review as possibly abuse are all reviewed and interpreted by a human being - usually myself or another staff member. If we need to, we ask each other for opinions on comments marked for review.
Are we smarter than all the judges in all the courts of the land? No.
Are we impartial? We strive to be impartial, despite what any particular commenter may want to believe.

The old forums were a success among a small group of regulars, and because the set-up was separate from the main 'news' website we could let the users be more free.
It was more fun for you and the other regulars, I know. There were also excesses - and I remember deleting threads and entire forum topics in there also.
The many changes made, switching to three different hosting platforms over the course of a year and a half - were an unfortunate mess. But they happened and we had no choice in them.
Liberal, conservative, moderate, green, independent, democrat, republican, man, woman, heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, freethinker ... the rulings have come down. You're not free to say whatever you want if its hurtful or abusive in this comment section or anywhere on this website without consequences.
And you (dba) JohanGaltenstein, you need to let go of your resentment over me pulling that comment you made you thought was funny and clever and I interpreted as hurtful. It's not gonna make a difference.

...definitely biased. I find the babysitting annoying, too, but since I'm playing in someone else's sandbox I'm willing to abide by the rules while I'm here. Nevertheless, I'd love to find a forum for political ideas that wasn't so hamstrung by political correctness because I do this to explore arguments, not to stroke my ego. Add another conservative to the list that knows for a fact that you are not impartial. Just 20 minutes ago you pulled another one of my comments. In fact, you pulled the whole article. You got a letter of reprimand once for messing with/misusing your job. If it's okay for libs, (eyolf, motley, southie, snowda, and the list goes on, it should be okay for Conservatives. Keep it up.
