BAXTER — Jack Pine Brewery, with a small taproom for tasting and limited retail, was approved Tuesday by the Baxter City Council.

The taproom, with no more than 12 seats, was approved as an accessory to the brewery with a conditional use permit. The nano-brewery is planned at 7942 College Road in Baxter’s Industrial Park. Sales are limited to beer brewed on site.

Brainerd attorney Lawrence W. Ulanowski, last year suspended from practicing law, is now facing disbarment.

The Office of Lawyers Professional Responsibility filed a petition for disciplinary action Monday with the Minnesota Supreme Court, seeking to end Ulanowski’s ability to practice law.

The supreme court will make a final decision. The Office of Lawyers Professional Responsibility reported the court’s final action may include dismissal of the petition seeking disbarment or discipline ranging from a reprimand to disbarment.

In 2009, 27.7 percent of deaths in Crow Wing County were from cardiovascular diseases, including strokes.

Statewide, there were 10,295 deaths that year for cardiovascular diseases. The American Heart Association reports an estimated 82.6 million American — that’s one in three — adults have one or more types of cardiovascular disease.

A new pilot project is aimed at changing the futures of people who use the most community services.

By following a model aimed at reducing the number of repeat customers at the Crow Wing County Jail, Crow Wing County Community Services plans to see if a difference may be made with a new approach in social services.

Gwen Anderson, Community Services supervisor, said the ultimate goal is to improve outcomes for people and reducing or avoiding the need for safety net services.
