WALKER - Cass County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) has obtained a $5,000 grant from Minnesota DNR and has pledge $5,000 in SWCD funds to begin implementing the county's aquatic invasive species plan.
The county adopted that plan Nov.
WALKER - Sheriff Tom Burch noted in his annual report to the county board that deputies cut average response time to calls from 15 minutes to 9.9 in 2013, despite a 5.5 percent rise in the number of calls for service.
WALKER - Cass County townships will share $460,870 in gas tax money this year, up $15,611 from last year.
This is the first year under a new state law. Previously, each township had to levy locally a minimum amount to qualify for the state gas tax.
WALKER - Central Services Director Tim Richardson reported the county is now using its option to alternate fuel oil and propane use during the recent shortage of propane.
Cass has a contract for this winter's propane at about $1.
WALKER - Cass County property foreclosures were up slightly in 2013 from 2012, but remain well below numbers in 2011 and 2010.
There were 95 foreclosures in 2013, 90 in 2012, 116 in 2011 and 164 in 2010.
CASS LAKE - The Cass County Board and Leech Lake Tribal Council capped a two-hour joint meeting Friday at the newly opened tribal government office building in Cass Lake by signing a five-year memorandum of understanding to cooperate.
