A flip of the coin elected Gary J. LeBlanc to the Trommald City Council Monday night after he and incumbent council member Cheryl Swanson tied with the 21 votes apiece for one of two spots on the council.
The Brainerd lakes area's two newly elected Republican state representatives Mark Anderson of Lake Shore and Ron Kresha of Little Falls were notable exceptions to the success of Democratic legislative candidates in other parts of the state.

Two incumbent House members in one district resulted in a face-off that saw Rep. Tom Persell, DFL-Bemidji, defeat Rep. Larry Howes, R-Walker Tuesday for the House District 5A seat.
■ Ruud defeats Stevenson, returns to Senate
Carrie Ruud of Breezy Point will return to the Minnesota Senate after being elected in 2002 and serving one term. The Republican-endorsed candidate was formerly mayor of Breezy Point.
Republican Carrie Ruud of Breezy Point, who previously served one term in the Minnesota Senate, held a lead late Tuesday night over DFLer Taylor Stevenson of Baxter, 6,885-5,427 or 55.8 percent to 44 percent.
