But about a month after the aquatic invasive species were found in Pelican Lake, it's sorting out to be a good news/bad news proposition on the popular Brainerd area lake. And possibly more good news than bad, at least as of late.
At first glance, they might appear to be wood duck houses built by someone with an affinity for The Purple.
And that wouldn't be unusual
in these parts, where Vikings purple shows up in the most unusual of places.
This wasn't about their quick-draw abilities. No, these were a pair of sharpshooters.
But Dave Schroeder and Abbie Burley were quick to the point.
"You've seen the movie, right?" they asked, almost in unison, treating it as a rhetorical question.

If this most recent “comeback” is anything like the first this rainy spring and summer, expect the world-class Cuyuna Lakes Mountain Bike Trails to be in a class by themselves.
It's an access in name only these days.
And the public boat access on the north side of Lake Sibley in Pequot Lakes isn't unlike most in the greater Brainerd lakes area - inaccessible thanks to recent heavy rains.
In many places, outside of the workplace, business is conducted on the golf course.
But, of course, the Brained lakes area isn't most places. Sure, world-class golf tracts abound here. But so do, say, sporting clays courses.
Get 120 boats together for a day of fishing and you're going to hear stories.
It is, after all, why most - if not all - of these anglers were here.
Stories of perseverance and triumph have that effect.
