Labor Day Weekend: Life in the 1800s from Cradle to Grave

Events at the Minnesota Historical Soceity - Sat, 08/31/2013 - 12:00am
Sibley House Historic Site, Mendota, Visit Historic Fort Snelling and the Sibley House Historic Site on Labor Day weekend for a special event focusing on major life events for people in the early 19th century. Theatrical performances and tours will highlight how birth, marriage and death were viewed during the early 1800s and allow visitors a look into the personal lives of early Americans.Visitors can purchase a special ticket for both Historic Fort Snelling and the Sibley House Historic Site. A free shuttle will be available between each site courtesy of the Friends of the Sibley House.

History Happy Hour: Brewing in Saint Paul

Alexander Ramsey House, St. Paul, Socialize and have a beer at the Ramsey House while learning about the history and tradition of brewing in Saint Paul. Mark Stutrud, founder of Summit Brewing, will talk about the growth of the industry, the effects of prohibition and the current state of beer and brewing in Minnesota's capital city. Governor Ramsey's collection of beer bottles from some of the city's oldest breweries will be on display for the occasion. This program is for people 21 years and older. Price of admission includes 2 drink tickets, snacks and presentation at 6 p.m.

9 Nights of Music: Tango Pohjan Tahden

Minnesota History Center, St. Paul, The History Center's popular outdoor music concert series ends with the Finnish Tango music of Tango Pohjan Tahden.Enjoy "9 Nights of Music" every Tuesday in July and August. The series, now in its 16th year, presents the rich and vibrant sounds of Minnesotas multicultural community in free performances held on the terrace of the Minnesota History Center. Tapestry Folkdance Center provides dance instruction from 6:30 to 7 p.m. Live music and dancing starts at 7 p.m. Bring a lawn chair and pack a picnic or purchase food from the Caf Minnesota terrace grill. Come early and take advantage of free admission to the museum galleries from 5 to 8 p.m. There is a nominal fee for parking. In case of rain, performances will be held inside the History Center in the 3M Auditorium.9 Nights of Music is presented by Xcel Energy. Additional support is provided by 99.5 Classical MPR and the Tapestry Folkdance Center.

Bugler One-Day Camp

Historic Fort Snelling, St. Paul, Spend an afternoon with the musicians of Historic Fort Snelling and learn how to play the bugle. Campers will be issued bugles so they can practice a variety of historic tunes, many of which are still used today. No musical experience is necessary. Boy Scouts can use this class to work towards their Bugling Merit Badge. Space is limited to 10 per camp. For ages 10 to 14.

Real Horse Power

Forest History Center, Grand Rapids, The draft horse powered much of America well into the twentieth century. Logging and lumbering, one of the nations largest and most important industries relied heavily on the powerful Percheron draft horse to move the huge white pine logs from the forest to landings on the river. This event features horses doing traditional tasks such as skidding, cross hauling and jammer loading. See draft horses up close and talk to the teamsters. Bring your camera.

Ojibwe Moccasin Workshop

Mille Lacs Indian Museum and Trading Post, Onamia, Learn techniques of working with leather at this two-day workshop. Participants will make a pair of Ojibwe-style moccasins to take home. Registration is required 3 days prior to workshop. A light lunch and refreshments will be provided both days. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Discounted hotel rooms are available for workshop participants on Saturday night at Grand Casino Mille Lacs. A minimum of five participants required to host workshop.

Defining State Lines in the 1850s

Historic Forestville, Preston, With 19th century settlement came boundary lines, surveys and mapping of new territories. Learn about this process as engineer Don Borcherding takes on the role of Andrew Talcott, a surveyor who in the early 1800s helped establish the boundaries of Ohio, Michigan and the state line between Iowa and Minnesota. Borcherding will talk about the early practice of surveying and explain the "Talcott Method" for determining latitude by observing stars near their zenith.

Naamijig: Honoring Our Traditions (The Ones Who Dance)

Mille Lacs Indian Museum and Trading Post, Onamia, Experience life on the "powwow trail" through a collection of Ivy Vainio's 2011 and 2012 digital photographs. The powwow dancers featured in each of the sixteen photographs are accompanied by a written narrative from the dancers on what it means to dance at powwows. Ivy Vainio is a direct descendent of a Grand Portage Band of Ojibwe member and is very connected to Ojibwe culture, values and beliefs. The exhibit is free. It is on view during museum open hours, May 15-Aug. 18.The public is invited to meet the artist at a closing reception, Aug. 18, at 11 a.m. The reception will include refreshments, a short program, and a chance to meet the artist.

Cass Gilbert Home and Building Tour

Minnesota History Center, St. Paul, From his first St. Paul apprenticeship through his 1934 design of the United States Supreme Court building in Washington D.C., Cass Gilbert built a national reputation as one of the most prolific and stylistically versatile architects of his generation. Gilbert's Minnesota legacy includes many homes and churches on and around Summit Avenue, as well as his design for the Minnesota State Capitol in Saint Paul.This bus tour offers offers unprecedented access to several Cass Gilbert works. Stops include St. Clements Episcopal Church built in the Romanesque variant of English Gothic style in 1895, the Richardsonian-Romanesque style Dayton Avenue Presbyterian Church and several privately owned homes in the Summit Hill neighborhood. The Tour bus will pick up and drop off guests at the Minnesota History Center. Presented in partnership with the Cass Gilbert Society.

Civil War Weekend: 1863 Year of Decision

Historic Fort Snelling, St. Paul, Travel back to the year 1863 and explore Fort Snelling's Civil War history with costumed staff and reenactors. Visit interactive learning stations to find out about Minnesota's soldiers at Gettysburg and other Civil War battles, the Emancipation Proclamation and the end of slavery, the Sibley Expedition of 1863, and much more. Demonstrations include cannon and musket firings, Civil War medicine, cooking and an 1860s fashion show.
