Nisswa parks kick off summer

NISSWA — The Nisswa Parks Department announced a Summer Kick-off Party from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 1 at Nisswa Park.

The event will feature Water Wars and the St. Christopher youth group will serve food. There will also be kickball and a bounce house.

In case of inclement weather announcements will be made on WJJY 106.7.

The parks department also announced it has room in its tennis program, all golf programs at The Pines, Safety Town and Summer Art Adventures. The department’s website for details: www.ci.nisswa.mn.us.

Radinovich, Ward authored provisions in jobs bill

The Minnesota House of Representatives Wednesday passed the conference committee report on HF 729, the Omnibus Jobs, Energy, Commerce, and Housing Finance Bill on a 73 to 59 vote. The bill contains provisions authored by State Representatives John Ward, DFL-Baxter, and Joe Radinovich, DFL-Crosby.

Cass Lake felon pleads guilty to possessing 1 .357 revolver

MINNEAPOLIS — A 25-year-old Cass Lake man Wednesday pleaded guilty in federal court to being a felon in possession of a .357-caliber revolver.

Anthony Duane Howard, who was indicted on March 12, entered his plea before United States District Court Judge Joan N. Ericksen.

Crosby man pleads guilty to possessing a pistol and drugs

MINNEAPOLIS — A 32-year-old Crosby man Tuesday pleaded guilty to possessing a .40-caliber, semi-automatic pistol along with approximately 30 grams of methamphetamine in federal court.

Zachari Allen Kozar pleaded guilty to one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm and one count of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. Kozar entered his plea before United States District Court Judge Ann D. Montgomery.

The following recently were sentenced in Crow Wing District Court:

Brittany Kelm, 24, Brainerd, was sentenced to five years of supervised probation for felony theft.

Jacob Lee Anderson, 25, Brainerd, was sentenced to one year in Crow Wing County Jail with one year of that time stayed for gross misdemeanor traffic regulation violation.

Jeremiah L. Kramer, 21, Brainerd, was sentenced to one year in county jail with 335 days of that time stayed for two years.

Crosslake man injured after losing control of motorcycle

CROSSLAKE — A 69-year-old Crosslake man was injured Tuesday when the motorcycle he was driving lost control and went off the road hitting a sign on the 38000 block of Crow Wing County Road 66 and Anchor Point Road in Crosslake, reported the Crosslake Police Department.

Bruce C. Addington was transported by North Memorial Ambulance to Cuyuna Regional Medical Center in Crosby.

The crash was reported at 2:17 p.m.

MENAHGA (AP) — Firefighters were getting the upper hand Wednesday on a wildfire that destroyed several structures as it scorched about 7,100 acres in northwestern Minnesota.

Jean Goad, spokeswoman for the Minnesota Interagency Fire Center, said crews were off to a good start toward containing the Green Valley Fire, which started on private land during windy weather Tuesday afternoon, about two miles northwest of Menahga, a community of about 1,300 people.

Better Brainerd hosts digital photo scavenger hunt

A Better Brainerd is conducting a digital photo scavenger hunt at 1 p.m. Sunday in northeast Brainerd. The event is called “Snapshot Brainerd” and it is free and open to the public.

Teams will consist of three people, with at least one person under age 18 and one person over age 55.

Crow Wing County Board seeks authority related to issuing bonds for sewer district

It took a few motions, but Crow Wing County commissioners voted to seek a court order to clarify the county’s authority related to issuing bonds on behalf of the North Long Lake Sewer District.

John Sausen, assistant county attorney, told commissioners Tuesday he didn’t think the move was needed but the county’s bond council Kennedy and Graven was requesting it.

The county established the North Long Lake Sewer District in the 70s and the Department of Natural Resources may require system improvements.

School board supports race equity initiatives

An effort to close education gaps between white students and those of color is now officially supported by Brainerd schools.

A trio leading the effort appeared before the Brainerd School Board during a special meeting Wednesday, asking for support.

Officials started meeting two years ago to begin looking at data, have conversations about race and equity, and start talks on changing demographics.

New location for Teen Challenge Program

The Central Minnesota Adult and Teen Challenge’s outpatient program, Life Renewal, is pleased to announce it is moving.

“This program has grown out of its current space, so we are moving it into a larger facility at the corner of Sixth and Oak streets in Brainerd,” said Sam Anderson, MnTC Center director.

Now in its second year, the program has expanded to include three full-time counselors and offers afternoon and evening groups for women and men. Life Renewal is a licensed outpatient chemical dependency program that focuses on client’s strengths.

C-I student hasn't missed a day of school

Some of Trevor Fisher’s classmates found any excuse to stay home from school.

Upset stomach, a cold, flu or unfinished paper — parents hear them all. But not Fisher. He hasn’t missed a single day of school. Ever.

The Crosby-Ironton High School senior graduates in a few weeks with perfect attendance, starting all the way back in kindergarten.

It’s an achievement Principal Jim Christenson hasn’t seen in his 11 years in his position.

“It’s remarkable, really,” he said. “I’m amazed a student could go without missing one day.”
