Dairy Queen worker accused of dealing cocaine at mall

FARGO – A Dairy Queen employee at a Fargo shopping mall faces felony drug distribution charges after police allegedly found cocaine and drug-dealing paraphernalia in her purse following a report that she had been dealing drugs there.

Alyssa Kathleen Weisbeck, 21, of Fargo, was charged in Cass County District Court with one count of Class A felony possession of cocaine with intent to deliver, and one count each of possession of hydrocodone and possession of drug paraphernalia, both Class C felonies.

FARGO – Chadd was frustrated and angry. He needed to vent.

So he logged on to an online forum for diabetes sufferers like himself, and he shared what was on his mind.

In a 600-word post, he told of how two Fargo police officers pulled him over the night before, suspecting he had drugs on him. He wrote that they searched his car with a police dog, broke two vials of his insulin and ripped out an insulin pump that was connected to his body. His blood-sugar levels shot up, and he needed medical attention.

College board gives sneak preview of redesigned SAT exam

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Prospective college students on Wednesday got a peek at new sample questions on the SAT, a widely used college entrance exam that will undergo a redesign over the next two years.

The College Board, which oversees the exam required by most colleges and universities for admission, said it was releasing the draft test specifications on its website "to illustrate the shifts in the redesigned SAT."

Emily woman hurt in crash on Highway 210

A 66-year-old Emily woman was injured when the Chevrolet Silverado truck she was driving rolled over at 7:22 a.m. Wednesday on Highway 210, one mile east of Brainerd, reported the Minnesota State Patrol.

Peggy Tutch, who had a cut on her head and a sore shoulder, was transported by North Memorial Ambulance to Essentia Health-St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Brainerd.

Man killed in northeastern Minnesota crash

MIDWAY TOWNSHIP - One man was killed and another injured Tuesday morning in a head-on collision between a pickup truck and a semi in Midway Township.

Emergency responders were dispatched to the intersection of Midway and North Cloquet roads just before 7:30 a.m. The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office reported that witnesses said a black Toyota Tacoma pickup driven by a 25-year-old man from Wrenshall was southbound on Midway Road when it crossed into the opposite lane, striking a semi with a crane attachment head-on.

Former New York Mayor Bloomberg to spend $50 million in anti-gun drive

The initiative's political target is the powerful pro-gun lobby, including the National Rifle Association, that spends millions of dollars each year to back gun-rights supporters.

Swarm of bees delays flight from Vegas to Duluth

DULUTH - An Allegiant Air flight destined for Duluth from Las Vegas late Monday afternoon had to return to Las Vegas shortly after takeoff because of a swarm of bees.

Allegiant spokeswoman Jessica Wheeler said the flight crew reported at 5:30 p.m. Duluth time that shortly after takeoff, a swarm of bees was clouding the windshield and bees were being ingested into the plane’s engines.

The crew decided to abort the flight, landing safely back in Las Vegas. More than 160 passengers were put on a new plane and got to Duluth at about 10:30 p.m., an hour and 40 minutes later than scheduled.

PINE CITY - A minister who led a cult-like religious sect in northern Pine County sexually abused numerous girls and young women who lived apart from their families in a “Maidens Group,” according to charges filed in State District Court.

Victor Arden Barnard, 52, was charged last week in State District Court with 59 counts of criminal sexual conduct. The charges pertain to two young women who reported being abused during a period of several years while living on the congregation’s compound in Finlayson. But authorities said there probably are more victims.

Decomposed body found in Duluth neighborhood

DULUTH - Duluth police are investigating after human remains were found Tuesday afternoon in the city’s Lincoln Park neighborhood.

Officers got a call just after 2 p.m. about a dead body. A witness saw a decomposed body 100 yards from an intersection along a fence and brush line.

Investigators were trying to identify the body, which was taken to the Medical Examiner’s Office to rule on the cause and manner of death.

Baxter approves CUP as rental townhomes replace plans for apartment building

BAXTER — The Baxter City Council approved a conditional use permit for two, six-unit rental townhomes on Cypress Drive.

The townhomes are going up instead of a planned 50-unit apartment building with underground parking. The council heard there wasn’t demand with the economy for another larger apartment building in the complex. In place of that apartment building, the townhomes will be built in front of the other three-story apartment buildings. Kuepers requested the conditional use permit for the town.

Area runner recalls Boston marathon bombing one year later

When two bombs exploded near the finish line of the 2013 Boston Marathon, Brainerd resident Melissa Goble was trying to board a subway train less than two blocks away. Goble had just finished running the marathon 20 minutes earlier — a pace 11 minutes faster than she intended.

“It was crazy,” Goble recalled. “We had no idea what was happening.”

As potential jurors continued to be interviewed, one by one, various connections to the victims emerged.

Preservation of Crow Wing County’s historic building, the former jail that now houses the museum, had commissioners wondering about costs, who should pay and what voters wanted nearly 40 years ago.

At their committee of the whole meeting, Crow Wing County commissioners considered a proposal to seek grant funding that could cover half the cost of $266,000 in building repairs.

The Brainerd Fire Department responded to a call at 10 a.m. Tuesday of a two-vehicle crash on Washington Street near northeast Brainerd. There were no injuries, but one of the vehicles leaked gas. Firefighters fixed the problem and cleared the scene at 10:09 a.m.
