Carver Co. set to inspect boats for zebra mussels

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Carver County officials will begin checking all boats entering Lake Minnewashta for zebra mussels this spring, marking the first time that the DNR has given a local government authority to conduct such inspections and deny lake entry.

Zebra mussels have infested about two dozen Minnesota lakes, including the popular Lake Minnetonka.

The DNR is trying to stop the spread of this invasive species by increasing its own inspections at boat landings and on roads, but Steve Gunther, president of the Lake Minnewashta Preservation Association, said the state can’t do it alone.

Laws require all boaters leaving a lake to remove zebra mussels and weeds from their boats and trailers, and to drain bilge water, empty bait buckets and dump other onboard water that may contain microscopic mussel larvae or invasive plants.
